While this winter has been lacking in snow for the early part of the season, we’re doing our best to make the most of what we do have. Here’s a quick video that gives you a peek at where we ride in Northern Vermont & some nooks and crannies of the PowderJet shop. http://vimeo.com/35933490
Our fearless author & PowderJet ambassador: Jesse Huffman after 4 runs of knee deep powder @ Stowe. Check the napkin between the goggle and beanie style. Jesse swears it removes fog by the time you ride up the chairlift and are ready to drop into the woods.

I went into a shoe repair shop today to see if a pair of boots had been repaired for my wife. While I was in there I admired various tools, materials & two large stitching machines that were made in the 1940′s. I’ve always been interested in work environments, the tools that people use for their occupation & how they decided to get into their line of work . I started asking the owner/cobbler how he got into and if he learned shoe repair from someone. He told me that he owned a leather shop for 10 years and then the opportunity to buy the shoe repair shop presented itself. His learning came by way of watching the previous owner of the shop. Before he was allowed to work on a single pair of shoes, he had to sit there and observe every repair that passed through the shop doors. Once he learned the trade and took over ownership of the shop, he admitted that the first year wasn’t easy and he still made mistakes. He then told me that he’s been repairing shoes for over 20 years. That’s serious dedication.
Our goal with PowderJets is to combine our knowledge of snowboard construction with our passion for snowboarding and make high performance boards while using materials that have minimal impact on the environment. 2011 was a breakthrough year for us and we’re excited to take what we’ve learned and apply it to new shapes and designs. Who knows, maybe 20 years from now someone will walk through our doors and ask us how we got where we are.
With the lack of snow in Vermont right now, we’ve had plenty of time to focus on building boards, reflect on the past year & set new goals for 2012. One thing we’ve caught ourselves doing more often lately though is the great American past-time of mind surfing. Whether we’re in the shop applying a coat of bio-resin, taking our dogs for a walk in the woods, or driving to the grocery store; we find ourselves thinking about lines we rode or new mountains we want to ride. A quick ollie off a small pillow, the anticipation of making turns through an un-touched field of powder, the sound of our buddies hollering as we fly down a river bed and slash beside some un-suspecting spruce… our minds are there. We’ve been riding for over half our lives & the ritual of visualizing the opportunities that snow and our boards produce is just as strong as when we started riding.
So, we wait and wonder when the next storm will hit. We wonder if the snow will stay & if we’ll be able to put our thoughts into action. We stand at the workbench sanding boards and watch the particles of wood flying through the air and falling to the floor. We keep checking the snow report & hope that the meteorologist will be wrong.
It looks pretty bare outside the shop right now & we’re talking about what mountains do have snow. There are six new boards stacked by the press ready to be shipped out. The feelings of restlessness are growing. Then it happens again. Our minds start drifting off to thoughts of deep powder and mountains we want to ride. The lines we rode last winter are no longer visible, but we know that they existed (until the next storm covered them up). Or, at least we’re pretty sure they did. Maybe it’s time to check the weather again.
